13-YEAR-OLD CARLOS WALKS A TIGHTROPE BETWEEN DREAM AND RESPONSIBILITY IN THE LAND OF CHILDREN, NICARAGUA
13-year-old Carlos lives in the Barrio, a shantytown on the outskirts of León, Nicaragua’s second largest city. He earns his money as a member of a Gigantona group, performing for tourists. In these traditional groups children dance, play theatre and recite poems. Carlos dances as the Enano, and the older Isabel provides the rhythm. But Carlos gets tired of jumping around and sweating; he’d rather be the „coplero“, the one reciting the poems. He creates a mess nobody is prepared for.
Trivia: The production didn't start with an already written script - rather, the story developed during their time in León, Nicaragua. The screenplay is based on various conversations and encounters, as well as on the experiences and adventures of the children who had previously worked together in two workshops with 'Andreas Kannengiesser' and the screenwriter, Catrin Lüth.
„An extraordinary film with a performance of a young boy, you will never forget. I love it. See it.
- Jon Voight, Actor, President of the Jury, Tokyo International Filmfestival 2008
„Just by watching this film, through the story, I could learn about a poor village in Nicaragua. Please see this boy grow in this film. The acting of this boy, for me is a miracle.
